The hills around Lanjaron are great for day or half day walks. Many people follow the mountain dirt roads, but ‘off the beaten track’ are hidden gems, giving a glimpse of rural life and brilliant views of the surrounding countryside.
Walking options range from an easy half day stroll to more challenging full day walk, including an exploration of the rio Lanjaron, the source of the water which makes this spa town famous.
Snowshoing is qreat fun and offers the opportunity to explore remote mountain areas where the ground is covered in snow. This combined with the Sierra Nevada’s winter sun, make it an ideal place for a winter break.
Trevenque is not as high as some, but none the less is a very stylish, appealing and at times challenging mountain. Well worth the effort to enjoy the summit and it’s extensive views of the higher mountains beyond.
For those who have some scrambling experience we can offer a exhilarating day linking a long scrambling routes on the ridges above the ski village at the western end of the Sierra Nevada range. Making use of the chairlifts to take the worst out of the ascents this is a great day out for those who want to get their hands on rock.
Lying north of the Sierra Nevada the limestone ridges of the Sierra de Huetor Natural Park make for a great days scrambling with routes ranging easy grade 1 up to exposed grade 3 routes.
Cerro de Caballo, is the most westerly 3,000m+ summit in Europe. Yet this peak offers a relatively easy ascent to its summit at 3011m. Lying at the start of what is perhaps the most spectacular valley in the whole range Caballo is climbed in a day via a number of routes starting from around 2,300m.
Mulhacen Summit, at 3482m Mulhacen is the highest point in mainland Spain, which puts it high on the tick list of many visitors to the area and mountaineers from across Europe. Whilst it can be climbed in a day it is far better to do the summit as a part of a two or three day package bases at the Poqueira mountain refuge which sits at 2,500m on the southern slopes of the mountain. Using the refuge as a base the summit is undertaken via the west ridge a spectacular mountain route with views of the north face of the main summits of the Sierra Nevada range. With two or three days at the refuge clients can also explore the wider area with the possibility of ascents of Veletta ( 3396m), scrambling on Pulpitto (2979m) or a trip across to Siete Lagunas a wonderfully remote mountain valley.
For those who want a bit of adventure we can offer gorge walks either at MONACHIL where suspension bridges span rthe river and we pass through natural rock tunnels or if you’re on the coast in the RIO CHILLAR where we walk up the stream bed to pass through fantastic narrow rock chasms whilst wading through the river itself.
Pampaneira, Bubion and Capileira are the three villages lying on the eastern side of what is perhaps the most popular walking area of the Alpujarra. The villages are linked by trails which traverse the valley sides and cross the Rio Poqueira on old packhorse bridges, these trails provide numerous routes through the valley for you to explore the area making the most of cool picnic spots by the river and passing through the picturesque villages so emblematic of the region. (5-6 hours medium)
Based in the Taha area of the Alpujarra this walk links a number of small picturesque villages using ancient pack horse trails running through olive and almond groves, passing Moorish remains and crossing the spectacular Rio Trevelz on an ancient medieval bridge. (5-6 hours medium.)
